Weitz Core Plus Income Fund Wins Two Lipper Fund Awards

OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Weitz Investment Management, Inc. (WIM) announced today that Weitz Core Plus Income Fund (WCPBX) received two 2024 Lipper Fund Awards. The fund, managed by co-heads of fixed income Tom Carney, CFA, and Nolan Anderson, was named the best fund over both the three- and five-year periods in Lipper’s Core Plus Bond Funds category.

The LSEG Lipper Fund Awards have been an industry leader for over 30 years in assessing and recognizing funds and fund managers based on their consistent risk-adjusted performance relative to their peers. Using Lipper’s proprietary quantitative methodology, the awards are an independent and uncompromised reflection of fund performance.

“Until recently, the industry has known Weitz as value equity investors,” said Wally Weitz, founder and co-chief investment officer of WIM. “And yet, during much of that time, we’ve been building an impressive track record in fixed income. Perhaps it took the recent volatility in the bond market to shine a light on Tom and Nolan’s exceptional work. I’m delighted that their efforts are being recognized.”

“The bond market has been rapidly evolving since the global financial crisis and the Dodd-Frank Act, and many indices aren’t capturing this evolution," said Nolan Anderson. “As active managers, we take a flexible approach considering the full breadth of the fixed income market as we aim to deliver differentiated outcomes versus broad market indices. We are proud to be recognized for the success of our process and results.”

“Many financial advisors we work with are questioning the traditional bond portfolio construct, designed almost entirely to track the Agg, and are embracing opportunities across the broader bond market,” said Jim Boyne, president of WIM. “We’re pleased to be a leader in a category that has seen and will continue to see tremendous growth.”

“In our view, the best offense is a good defense,” said Tom Carney. “One of the key drivers of our success is a keen focus on downside protection while continuously assessing the probability of being adequately compensated for any risk exposure in the portfolio. This approach has allowed us to achieve competitive performance on behalf of our clients and shareholders.”
