Survey Finds 60% of Companies Still Separate Personal and Business Device Use — Missing a Key Opportunity to Advance Sustainability Goals

Security requirements and operational needs remain top barriers for device consolidation

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Movius, the creator of MultiLine, the mobile app that provides users a separate and compliant business number for all work calls and messaging, today released new research showing that while sustainability remains a key priority for most organizations, mandatory device separation and security requirements are primary barriers for device consolidation. The findings highlight a growing need for forward-thinking policies that support reducing electronic waste and cutting carbon emissions. With a single new smartphone generating an average of 85kg of CO2 or equivalent emissions (CO2e) in the first year alone, it's clear that rethinking device strategies is essential for a more sustainable future.

“The impact of one smartphone is about the same as driving a gas-powered car for over 200 miles,” said Ananth Siva, CEO of Movius. “For organizations using thousands of devices, the cumulative impact on the environment is staggering.”

Among the 200 senior managers surveyed, 60% said that their company policy requires employees to have separate devices for personal and business use and more than half (54%) stated security requirements as a primary factor that prevents their company from consolidating mobile devices. Operational needs reported as the second biggest factor.

Additional findings:

  • Multiple Devices are Rampant: In nearly 30% of companies, employees use three devices (mobile phones, tablets and laptops), and 13.5% use four or more devices
  • Sustainability Efforts Often Overlook E-Waste: While 81% of companies have sustainability goals, less than half (47%) have goals that focus on reducing electronic waste and carbon footprint
  • Cost and Environmental Impact Are Equally Important: 37% of respondents said that cost savings and environmental impact are equally considered when it comes to reasons for reducing mobile device use

“Sustainability remains a top priority among businesses around the world, but a majority are not focused on the lasting damage that digital consumption can have on the environment,” said Ananth Siva, CEO of Movius. “Continuing to separate work and personal devices is a major contributor to global CO2 emissions, and without intervention this trend will skyrocket. At Movius, we believe that personal and business conversations can take place on the same device without jeopardizing the conversations that matter most.”
