On February 17, 2026, Mayor Mamdani unveiled his $127 billion budget for fiscal year (FY) 2027, $11 billion more than in FY 2026 and the largest in New York City’s history. Mayor Mamdani is keeping his promise to socialist supporters to raise taxes and massively increase spending without any budget cuts. A central component of Mamdani’s fiscal strategy is a proposed 9.5 percent increase in New York City’s property tax rate. Raising housing costs for homeowners and renters would weaken the city’s economic competitiveness. Mayor Mamdani also wants the estate tax threshold reduced from $7.5 million to $750,000 and the top rate raised to 50 percent, hitting millions more New Yorkers hard at the worst possible time.

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “Mayor Mamdani’s contemptable budget plan is the most expensive and destructive in the history of New York City. His outrageous tax increases and failure to cut a single penny of wasteful spending will drive large and small businesses and residents at every income level out of the city at a record pace. For promoting socialist policies that will increase the control, power, and size of government and make New York City less affordable, Mayor Mamdani was an easy choice for March 2026 Porker of the Month.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. For more than two decades, Porker of the Month is a dubious honor given to lawmakers and government officials who have shown a blatant disregard for the taxpayers.
