Nant Biorenewables Expands U.S. Manufacturing Capacity and Multi-Material Capabilities in Gadsden, Alabama

GADSDEN, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NantBioRenewables, the company behind the Wave Ware™ line of high-performance renewable foodservice products, today announced the expansion of its U.S. manufacturing capabilities in Gadsden, Alabama, broadening its material platforms, custom resin formulation and compounding capabilities, and thermoforming capacity to support customers across foodservice, consumer packaged goods (CPG), and specialty packaging.

The expanded facility now manufactures across polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and multiple bioplastic platforms, including TÜV-certified home-compostable and BPI-certified commercially compostable materials. This multi-material flexibility enables operators and brands to align product performance, regulatory compliance, and sustainability objectives while reducing dependence on overseas converters and extended supply chains.

“Our customers want performance, compliance, and reliability and they want it without the long lead times and variability that come with offshore production,” said Kenn Budlong, COO and Chief Engineering Officer. “By manufacturing in Alabama, we can offer short lead times, customer-friendly MOQs, and a level of quality oversight that is difficult to achieve when production is happening 6,000 miles away.”

Expanded Product Line and Thermoforming Capabilities

In addition to its well-known compostable straw, NantBioRenewables now produces a full line of foodservice disposables, including:

  • Cold cup lids
  • Bowl lids
  • Trays
  • Plates
  • Bowls
  • Specialty items for high-volume operators

The company’s custom thermoforming capabilities support a wide range of applications across foodservice, consumer packaged goods, agriculture, and specialty industrial markets.

Custom Resin Formulation and Compounding

As part of the expansion, NantBioRenewables has further strengthened its research and development and materials science capabilities, offering custom resin formulation and compounding across PP, PE, and compostable bioplastic platforms.

These capabilities include the integration of the company’s proprietary ocean calcium sand technology, designed to enhance material performance while maintaining cost-conscious product profiles.

“We can custom formulate and compound resins across PP, PE, and compostable bioplastics using our proprietary ocean calcium sand,” said Dr. Andrey Tyuftin, PhD, Lead Research Chemist, Polymer Formulation & Compounding. “It gives customers a sustainable, cost-effective performance boost without disrupting existing processing or mechanical requirements.”

Precision Tubular Packaging

The Gadsden facility also supports customizable tubular structures up to 10 mm round, enabling domestic production for:

  • Food and beverage
  • Cosmetics
  • Single-dose pharmaceutical applications
  • Nutraceuticals

This capability provides brands with a U.S.-based alternative to imported small-diameter packaging, with tighter process control, faster iteration, and improved supply chain responsiveness.

With tooling, engineering, compounding, and production under one roof, NantBioRenewables offers:

  • Short development cycles
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Faster iteration than overseas manufacturers
  • Stable domestic supply
  • Consistent quality control

“As regulations evolve and operators look for higher-performing alternatives to paper-based disposables, we’re focused on giving them materials that work — whether that’s PP, PE, or certified compostable bioplastics,” Budlong said. “Manufacturing here in the U.S. gives our customers the flexibility they need to stay compliant, maintain quality, and keep their supply chains stable.”
