“We’re proud to partner with GroundTruth because we share their commitment to protecting our oceans from plastic pollution,” said Freedman, founder of Stable Road Foundation. “This is a global issue that hits close to home; the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is growing every year. KULEANA is making an impact with audiences around the world, and we’re honored to help preserve Hawaii’s natural beauty for generations to come.”

In early April, KULEANA won the Audience Choice Award from the Skyfire Environmental Film Festival. The inaugural edition of the festival, which features films focused on topics such as climate change and sustainability, received over 120 submissions from more than 30 countries. The awards ceremony was held in Tempe, AZ.

In March, KULEANA was honored with the Producer Vision Award at the 7th edition of the Blue Water Film Festival in San Diego, CA. Hosted by the Blue Water Institute, the festival commemorates the United Nations’ World Water Day (March 22) and celebrates local marine science and exploration. Over 5,000 people attended this year’s event to see its 30+ films.

Narrated by Woody Harrelson and directed by Georgia Scott, KULEANA has been hailed as a “visually stunning” depiction of the fight to save oceans from plastic pollution. The film was shot largely in Hawaii and features local sports legends such as surfer Kai Lenny and baseball star Kolton Wong, who are part of a growing movement to remove single-use plastics from sporting events and daily life in general.

Following its 2025 premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival, KULEANA has inspired a global impact campaign to fight plastic pollution, attracting popular support and celebrity endorsements around the world. Jaden Smith recently hosted a private screening for the film in Los Angeles, with additional events planned with major sports leagues throughout the year.

Stable Road Foundation, founded in 2017 by Freedman, has long made environmental conservation one of its highest priorities. Along with its work to bring clean, sustainable power to isolated communities around the world, the Foundation’s efforts on Maui include planting native trees, rehabilitating wildlife refuges, and participating in beach cleanups.
